Artist Bio
Devon Anderson is primarily a sculptor and performance artist. They received their Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art and Italian Studies at Dickinson College. They were raised in Woodstock, NY and moved to Venice, Italy shortly after graduation where the topic of human interaction became a key interest within their works. They currently reside between Brooklyn, NY and Venice, Italy where they are completing an internship at the Venice Art Biennale.
They create pieces that contain mixed media sculptures. The combination of the various materials provides an outlet in order to convey an emotional chaos. However, through using heavy materials such as thick fabric and clay, the objects attain a sense of gravity. This allows them to be personified by the viewer and creates attachment: reminiscent of coping mechanisms.   Â
Their works portray the struggles of living, whether that includes relationships, exploitation, or harmful coping mechanisms intended to mediate stressors. They use the idea of discomfort to inspire their works. Rather than depicting the actions that are stressful, they try to convey these feelings through images that are literal such as oozing pus, regurgitation, or displaced organs. The goal is not tell the viewers a specific emotion that they should feel, but instead gain an authentic reaction, creating an individualistic experience.
Devon works often with the presence of objects that are meant to be concealed to represent explicit vulnerability. Everyone has a way of coping with vulnerability and they want to capture the understanding of these experiences. Their overall intention is to spur questioning around social normalities as well as provide a sense of captivity.
